The Spekboom
River runs through the Elandsdoorn Conservancy, on which Lepêllê
Lodge is situated. Approximately 9km of river front is
accessible for
the avid fly
angler. This stretch of river has been meticulously
protected over the last 15 years. As a result, small-scale and
large-scale
Yellow fish
populations are extremely healthy with abundant opportunity for
targeting trophy size fish.
All in all six of the indigenous 16
species of fish can be successfully targeted on fly. The
conservancy consists of a large variety of rapids, runs and
large pools,
enabling the fly angler to target the resident species with
relative success.
Abundant fauna provides welcomed
distraction while fishing, but caution is needed for resident
crocodiles and hippo.
Best times for targeting Yellows in
the crystal clear stream are March to May and August to
November, but in dry seasons these species are successfully
targeted
throughout the year.
Fishing strategy predominantly
consists of sight fishing. Spekboom small and large- scale
yellow fish are notoriously difficult to land as the take can be
extremely
subtle. However, fishing is still very good due to the abundant
opportunities the angler will be presented with during a session
on the river.
This is truly a remarkable fishery in
terms of population sizes, health and biodiversity, making it a
must do for any avid species fly angler.
